Final Record: 10–11
The 2025 season for the Marquette Mustangs was a roller-coaster journey filled with adversity, resilience, and late-season momentum. Facing one of the most demanding schedules in the region, Marquette showed growth as the season progressed, finishing with signature wins and competitive performances against top-tier opponents.
Early Season: Tough Tests Right Away
Marquette opened the year with a disciplined 1–0 win over Fort Zumwalt West, setting an early defensive tone. However, the Mustangs were quickly tested, dropping close matches to SLUH and Parkway West as they adjusted to the pace and physicality of elite competition.
A 3–1 victory over Columbia and a hard-fought 2–1 win against Fort Zumwalt North showed flashes of the team’s attacking potential, even as consistency proved difficult in the early weeks.
Midseason Grind Builds Character
The heart of Marquette’s schedule was unforgiving. Road trips to Kansas and matchups against programs like Webster Groves, Lafayette, and Nixa challenged the Mustangs weekly. While losses stacked up on paper, many came by narrow margins, underscoring how competitive Marquette remained even when results didn’t fall their way.
Despite the stretch, the Mustangs continued to battle and avoided letting setbacks define their season.
Offensive Balance Emerges
As the season progressed, Marquette’s attack became more balanced and dangerous.
Doss Gibson and Jaxson Spillenkothen led the way offensively, each finishing with 9 points, combining scoring instincts with playmaking ability.
Dexter Ditore provided a consistent scoring threat, tallying 4 goals, including a crucial game-winner.
Landon Derstine, Jaeden Sheen, and Reed Watson added timely goals, often changing the momentum of matches.
Caleb Walz stood out as a key distributor with 5 assists, helping unlock defenses in tight games.
Rather than relying on a single scorer, Marquette leaned into a team-first approach that allowed multiple players to contribute throughout the season.
Strong Play Between the Posts
Defensively, Nick Narsh was a cornerstone for the Mustangs. Logging nearly 1,500 minutes, Narsh recorded 9 wins, 4 shutouts, and an impressive .843 save percentage, consistently keeping Marquette competitive in close contests.
Backup keeper Cole Texeiria stepped in when needed, gaining valuable experience against strong opposition and contributing to the team’s depth.
Late-Season Surge
The defining chapter of Marquette’s season came in October. The Mustangs rattled off wins over Clayton, John Burroughs, Summit, Lindbergh, and Kirkwood, flipping their momentum and showcasing the growth developed earlier in the year.
A standout moment was the 2–0 win over Kirkwood, a complete performance that highlighted Marquette’s defensive organization and improved finishing.
Season Finale and Takeaways
While the season ended with a narrow 2–1 postseason loss to Kirkwood at SLUH, Marquette closed the year playing its best soccer—organized, confident, and competitive.
The 2025 Mustangs may not have finished with a winning record, but their season was defined by perseverance, development, and the ability to rise late against quality opponents. That foundation sets the stage for growth moving forward.
